Pride of Britain

The Problem

In normal non COVID-19 times the management of printing the Pride of Britain Hotels Collection Directory would be universally manageable but not easy.   With most businesses working remotely and Hotels closed the whole production process became a logistical problem. By the very nature of the job being printed on high end uncoated paper, especially the cover with a textured feel and foiled, all due care and consideration was needed. Pride of Britain Hotels is a premium collection of UK Hotels and the result must reflect this offering.


How we helped

Our initial focus was to work with the client’s agency on choosing the correct cover colour option for the 2021 production. We’d ordered the cover material in advance and used this solution to offer a machine wet proof of the cover with 8 full options of the cover on one sheet. This was produced and sent to both the end client and their agency home addresses for approval. This was subsequently signed off and used as a reference tool for the ‘live printing’

A 3-tiered plan then kicked in on receipt of final artwork. An approved 2020 copy was used as a bible and care was taken to fully brief in an internal meeting all SBS staff.

  1. An internal machine press pass was organised and running sheets of each section printed was held and then sent to the client’s agency (home address) for sign off.
  2. An external machine foiling pass was organised at our approved supplier. Attending was a representative of SBS and the client’s agency. The major issue was to ensure the fine detail of the client’s logo was bottomed out on the textured uncoated board. We had to ensure that brass counter force dies were used to ensure the fine detail required. The use of cheaper Magnesium dies would have produced a sub-standard result. The pass was planned and executed without fuss and in a record time. This was all down to planning.
  3. A full binding pass was conducted by our Commercial Director checking folding and final finish to ensure a professional result. File copies were checked and a box of each was organised to be sent to Pride of Britain Hotels and the agency’s main Account Director for approval. The final part of that process involved organising a delivery to the client’s mailing house to be ready for a post COVID-19 re launch.

The feedback

This was SBS’s first attempt at producing this brochure. There has been an overwhelming positive reaction from Pride of Britain Hotels and the client’s agency and has led to further work between the businesses.

Speaking after delivery was received, the Agency Account Director said: “Delivering the 2021 version of The Collection was no mean feat given the change in everyone’s circumstances caused by the pandemic. With hotels closed, team members furloughed or working from home and the need for social distancing to be maintained when print checks were required, it created a unique set of circumstances for delivering a 150-page hotel directory.

“SBS proved to be a great partner during this project, from the initial discussions around the print requirements, to the sourcing of paper supplies and addition of a cover print test, right through to the proofing, binding and foiling processes at the end of the project.

“We have been delighted with the final product and have had nothing but praise for the look and feel of the printed directory. Now all that remains is for it to take its rightful place on the coffee tables and reception desks of these wonderful luxury hotels as they begin to reopen their doors to the public.”
